A church should be about people, and Riverside Porto is proud of the love and care that it shows to its members, friends and visitors. Here, in our church community, you will find true family, a genuinely warm welcome and time to share together before and after the meeting.

During the summer of 2003, several unconnected people in Porto and Cascais started to believe that God wanted a new English language church community in the North of Portugal. Later that year a team from Riverside International Church of Cascais (near Lisbon) and Christian Associates International, a church planting organisation based in the USA and in Holland, met with the Porto based mission team of Grace Brethren International Missions, an American missionary society, and with a number of individuals and church leaders in the city. The outcome of those meetings was that, after a year of planning and preparation, Bill and Tina Mason moved to Porto and the new church opened its doors in Aguda, Vila Nova de Gaia.

In October 2013, the church moved closer to the heart of the city of Porto, just off the Boavista roundabout. It was an opportunity to not only be in a more accesable and central location, but also to be closer to our community. Riverside Porto now shares a building with Comunidade Cristã Restauração, a Portuguese speaking church. The bigger space was just what was need for the church to grow and expand its ministries.

In January 2014 the founders, Bill and Tina Mason, stepped down from leadership pending their return to the UK and Carlos and Ria Silvéria have been chosen as the new leaders. Riverside Porto is partners in ministry with Riverside International Church - Cascais, Lisbon, Coimbra and Albufeira (Algarve).

Since the opening of the church we have had the pleasure of the company of literally hundreds of internationally minded people. Some visited us for a very short time; many for much longer, but our vision has never changed. The church provides a place of meeting and friendship for the international community; it provides a place for believers to grow in their faith during their stay in Portugal; it provides a safe place for anyone to hear the Good News that man can have a restored relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ.

As our influence has grown we have been involved with the sporting community; the business community; the expatriate population and the university community amongst others. We are thrilled that the Kingdom (or the influence) of Almighty God is spreading in this region.

We are a Christian Church that combines traditional values with a contemporary style.

We aim to tell those who have not yet heard the Good News that mankind can have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

We welcome everyone warmly, regardless of their beliefs (or not), while remaining true to our God and our faith.

Our family includes people from all major branches of the Christian Church and from many countries; respecting the values of all and embracing the differences that make each of us unique.

At a typical meeting we find at least 8 nationalities represented.

At Riverside Porto we strive to maintain unity in the essentials, while enjoying diversity in the non-essentials and in everything showing charity (or love) for those who may believe differently from ourselves.

We are committed to serve Jesus Christ in accordance with those beliefs that have formed the basis of Christian faith for many hundreds of years and are shared by most mainstream churches in the form of the creeds. For us these essentials are:

  • We believe in one living and true God who created Heaven and Earth and all in them and who exists in three persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
  • God the Father has revealed Himself as a father who is infinitely holy, infinitely loving, infinitely wise and who holds all power in Heaven. God the Father involves Himself mercifully in the affairs of mankind.
  • Jesus Christ is God’s only Son, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and was born to a virgin by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Jesus Christ is both fully man and fully God and died to take the punishment that was due to us, in order that our relationship with God could be restored. He now intercedes for mankind with His Father in Heaven.
  • The Holy Spirit is the promised Comforter, sent to the church when Jesus returned to Heaven. He indwells all true believers and will teach them, instruct them and empower them to carry out the commission of Jesus Christ and to live as believers – if we allow Him.
  • We believe that the bible is the written Word of God, given by His inspiration and is our practical manual for everyday living. The scriptures lead us to faith in Jesus Christ.
  • We believe that there are two kingdoms in the spiritual realm, one of which trusts and serves Almighty God and the other that is in rebellion against Him. Anyone can be saved into God’s Kingdom by confessing their rebellion (or sins) and declaring their acceptance of Jesus Christ as their Saviour, who took the well-deserved penalty of our rebellion Himself in order to save us from the wrath of God.
  • We believe that it is God’s plan to offer redemption to those who will accept the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ on their behalf. In this way the relationship between man and God can be restored.
  • Through Jesus Christ all believers possess great spiritual authority and should no longer be subject to manipulation and oppression by Satan and God’s enemies.
  • We believe that the worldwide Church is the living, spiritual body of Jesus Christ, who is its only head. The local church is the instrument of extending that kingdom throughout the world.
  • We believe that Jesus Christ will return to Earth visibly, to raise the dead, judge the world and take His righteous place as King of His Kingdom.
  • We offer Baptism and Holy Communion to those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God who redeems us from sin and who freely chooses to follow Him.
